Can we envisage new relations between the overcrowded areas and the remote, sparsely inhabited areas? Is it possible to imagine a more sustainable world based on a more balanced connection between the “too crowded” and the “underpeopled” areas? These are some of the urgent questions raised by the pandemic. Most of European Capitals of Culture designed their programme as to include also suburban and remote/rural areas. Can culture regenerate the rural areas and create sustainable connections and dialogue with the urban ones? Can culture overcome the stereotypes and build new contemporary narratives about remote areas and their resilient communities? The Forum will be moderated by Beatriz Garcia -Associate Director of the Centre for Cultural Value. The focus will be placed on the tangible practices and examples presented by the following European Capitals of Culture: Matera 2019, Eleusis 2023, Veszprém-Balaton 2023, Oulu 2026. The initiative is organised by Matera-Basilicata 2019 Foundation and Italy Pavilion under the patronage of the European Commission

(Event promoted in collaboration with the Matera Basilicata 2019 Foundation)
