For Roberto Benigni, the project of La Vita è Bella was a huge gamble: a story, set in the Thirties and Forties, where his character ended up in the Nazi extermination camps. When the plot of the film (written with Vincenzo Cerami), announced for Christmas 1997, leaked amongst the exhibitors, there was a general uprising and only with difficulty the actor-director and the producer Vittorio Cecchi Gori managed to obtain the agreement of the cinematic exercise. It turned out that La Vita è Bella, as is well known, was a world triumph and even won three Oscars (best foreign film, best leading actor - Benigni - and best soundtrack - Nicola Piovani). Like every fairy tale, the fifth (and a half) film directed by Benigni is based on a paradox, in this case a father (the waiter Guido/Benigni) who desperately tries to conceal the horror of deportation from his son Giosué by hiding the truth from him and telling him another story. To some, this paradoxical form seemed to diminish the atrocity of the Shoah but, to most people (including the Jewish communities), on the other hand, it seemed an effective way to allude to the unspeakable.
