The Mediterranean Diet, which has been an intangible cultural heritage since 2010, has been in gradual decline due to both globalisation and the economic crisis of the last decade. Can we still consider it effective for prolonging life? In order to answer this question, the Forum will analyse recent large-scale longitudinal and long-term follow-up studies. More specifically, we will discuss the Moli-Sani Project, a prospective epidemiological study that began in 2005 and involved 25,000 people in the Molise region, and the PREDIMED study: the first study to evaluate the effect on the incidence of chronic degenerative diseases of adding extra virgin olive oil or dried fruit to the diet of a Mediterranean population. Specifically, Moli-Sani study has allowed for a better understanding of biological mechanisms linked to nutrition, with specific attention to eating habits, also in relation to socio-economic factors.
