Expo 2020 Dubai will afford Italian universities an opportunity for strengthening their existing international relations or establishing new ones by opening further channels for advanced education between Italian academic institutions and those of other countries participating in the Universal Exhibition.
This idea was expressed by Paolo Glisenti, the Commissioner for Italy’s participation in Expo Dubai, while speaking at the inauguration of “Unisustainathon: Sustainability as an opportunity”, the three-day event which gets under way today in the context of the Sustainable Development Festival and the celebrations for “One Year To Go” to the Expo, scheduled to start on 1st October next year.
Among the new “channels” available to Italian academic institutions is the one which opened up following the recent agreement stipulated between the Commissioner’s Office for Italy’s participation in the forthcoming Universal Exhibition and the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU).
The memorandum of understanding signed between the Commissioner’s Office and the UAEU – explained Glisenti – will make it possible to “open a scientific and advanced education channel between the United Arab Emirates and Italian universities and research centres, which will connect minds, abilities, talent and youths”.
The UAEU, which will have its own pavilion at Expo Dubai, will promote bilateral initiatives and events jointly with the Commissioner’s Office for Italy’s participation, with special emphasis on sustainable development and education, which will be integrated with the respective schedules before and during the six months of the Universal Exhibition.
“Thanks to cooperation and agreements such as this one, we can strengthen our abilities and our contribution to world development, adding value to the action of our academic institutions both in Italy and in the United Arab Emirates,” declared Ahmed Murad, the Commissioner General of the UAEU for Expo 2020, who spoke at the same event.
